Docs statement about custome fields

Noticed that within the docs for 'custom fields', the statement
When I open 'Options' and select custom fields, there is only blank content.
The fields do however appear as expected within the page content.
maybe incorrect.By default the custom fields appear in the options of the page. Go to:
Options > Custom
