i think that's fixed it.
when both users are set to administrator the information doesn't disappear from the dashboard.
left it idle for quite some time which previously would have caused the behaviour i first mentioned.

it's running remotely so no access i'm afraid. if i can provide further logs to help i'll see what i can do. my setup is maybe slightly unusual (private mode and few users) so it might not have been brought to your attention before. you've been a great help. i hope i can get involved a bit more in the future.

just a small update to this.
now if i'm inactive for a time and i'm on the main website (not admin panel) if i click a link it dumps me back into the admin panel (still logged in though and everything displays fine). think this happens if 'remember me' is checked or not on login. no biggie. just info.
