There is a bug, this does not work at the moment. But there is a fix:

There is all already there: editor, custom fields, image upload (or you can use for uploading the plugin Media or Media+).

Also you can use cover images, and the field description, if you do not use it for SEO (see theme Massively).

You can enable the plugin Open Graph and set a default image if there is no image in the content.

I guess that it is the class (class="medium-zoom-image") there is added to your images, that does it. This only transforms the cursor from pointer to zoom-in when hovering the image. How could this option be incorporated into the Editorial theme? You have to add a lightbox script with it'...
